Background of the Study
Traditional craft industries have long been a source of cultural identity and economic sustenance in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government, Rivers State. These industries, characterized by intricate artisanal skills and cultural expressions, rely heavily on the transmission of knowledge across generations. However, increasing youth rural-urban migration has led to a decline in the participation of younger artisans in traditional crafts. As youths seek opportunities in urban centers, the continuity of craft traditions is threatened (Okonkwo, 2023). This migration results in a labor shortage, diminished skill transfer, and potential cultural erosion (Uche, 2024). Recent studies highlight that the exodus of youth adversely impacts the sustainability of traditional craft industries (Eze, 2025). This study examines the multifaceted effects of youth migration on traditional crafts and explores strategies to mitigate its negative impact. Progress persists.

Statement of the Problem
Youth rural-urban migration poses a significant threat to traditional craft industries in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government by reducing the number of skilled artisans and disrupting intergenerational knowledge transfer. The migration of young people to urban areas has led to a decline in the workforce essential for sustaining artisanal production (Okonkwo, 2023). This trend contributes to the erosion of cultural heritage and economic instability in craft industries (Uche, 2024). The challenge is further compounded by limited incentives for youth to engage in traditional crafts (Eze, 2025). The study aims to identify these challenges and propose strategies to revitalize traditional craft industries. Innovative retention policies are crucial for sustaining traditional craft industries.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of youth rural-urban migration on traditional craft industries.

  2. To evaluate the challenges in intergenerational knowledge transfer due to migration.

  3. To propose strategies for revitalizing traditional crafts amid youth migration.

Research Questions:

  1. How does youth rural-urban migration affect traditional craft industries?

  2. What are the challenges in preserving artisanal skills due to migration?

  3. How can traditional crafts be revitalized in the face of youth migration?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Youth migration significantly reduces the participation of young artisans in traditional crafts.

  2. The decline in intergenerational knowledge transfer negatively impacts the sustainability of craft industries.

  3. Implementation of retention strategies can mitigate the adverse effects of youth migration on traditional crafts.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of youth rural-urban migration on traditional craft industries, highlighting cultural and economic challenges. The research offers insights for policymakers, cultural organizations, and community leaders to develop strategies that promote youth retention and skill transfer, thereby preserving indigenous craft heritage (Okonkwo, 2023). Ultimately, the findings contribute to sustainable cultural and economic development in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of youth rural-urban migration on traditional craft industries in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government, Rivers State. It focuses on cultural, economic, and generational aspects, excluding broader migration trends.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Youth Rural-Urban Migration: The movement of young people from rural areas to urban centers.

  2. Traditional Craft Industries: Sectors involving artisanal production rooted in cultural heritage.

  3. Intergenerational Knowledge Transfer: The process of passing skills and cultural practices from one generation to the next.
